I had this item without the thermostat. To fit into your window, extender plates are needed (often in addition to the one supplied with unit. Holmes offers to send you a free extender plate in their warranty literature, yet when I called I was told that they were out of stock. Also, I needed TWO more extenders for my wide, 42 inch windows. After waiting for about siw weeks I called Holmes again. I was told that there was no such thing as a waiting list, so they would never have called me if I hadn't called them. Then I was told that the "extra" extra panel would cost me $5.00 plus shipping...and I was told to keep calling them back on a regular basis to check for availability. My neighbor and I cut a panel out of wood and it allows the fan to function very well, though it makes the window look ugly.
